If an automatic watch is not worn for a day or two, or if the natural movement of the wrist is very small, it will wind down and need to be supplementarily wound by hand. To do this, turn the crown to twist the mainspring tighter, storing energy in the mainspring manually. When the crown is pulled out a short distance, the hands can be set to the desired time.
